• Interview with NYC Fashion & Lifestyle Photographer Francisco Marin

The world is a big place filled with many interesting people. Taking the time to get to know some of those individuals can really open doors and change lives. I got a chance to meet an amazing photographer from New York, Francisco Marin. His talent absolutely knows no boundaries. His love for photography really shines in his work, and that is what makes Francisco a master of his art.

Francisco has not always lived in New York. He is originally from a small town in southern Texas. He lived there for 18 years, and moved only to attend college at the University of Austin. Francisco made his stay in Austin for 5 years, before making his big move to New York City in 2011.

Photography has always been a way of life for Francisco. He recalls begging his mom to buy him a disposable camera to take on elementary field trips. He loved taking photos of the animals at the zoo, as well as photographing his friends. When Francisco got into high school, his physics teacher took special interest in his love for photography. The teacher had an old Polaroid camera, and gave it to Francisco to play around with. That was very special, and the pictures taken with that camera still remain some of Francisco’s favorite photographs.

In 2012, Francisco decided to get serious about taking photographs. He knew if he was going to make it as a professional photographer, he would have to make a name for himself. Francisco’s attitude changed. He no longer thought of photography as a hobby. He viewed every photo as art, and that is when he started making money to do the one thing he had loved for so many years.

Big or small, Francisco embraces every project that comes his way. Heart and soul are poured into his photography, and that is what sets him apart from other photographers. His positive attitude has brought about many amazing opportunities. Francisco said with confidence, “I have enjoyed everyone I worked for and  work with.”Recently, he had the opportunity to shoot some of the new women’s handbags and sandals in the Kenneth Cole spring/summer campaign. He hopes to continue working with more brands like this in the future.

When asked if there was something that inspired him to get into photography, Francisco had an awe inspiring response. He said, “I used to work at a college newspaper and I always really admired the photojournalists that I worked with. They would often go above and beyond the call of duty to take really interesting photos for the stories we wrote and edited. Even with very simple subjects, such as a man speaking at a podium at a press conference, these photographers made every photo look interesting. I was actually mentored by a very good friend of mine, Caleb Miller, who is a fantastic photojournalist. “

Francisco’s goal at the moment is to work with more brands by creating inspirational photographs that can be utilized in social media. While working with brands, he hopes to some day get the chance to do a Lookbook for an entire collection.

Location has a lot to do with making a photograph come alive. When I asked Francisco if he could go anywhere in the world to shoot some photo’s, where would it be? He was baffled for a minute, only because there are so many stunning places to photograph. At this moment he is most interested in shooting in the Netherlands where the Dutch grow these huge fields of tulips. He told me to check it out by googling “Dutch tulip farm”.

The perfect photo shoot for Francisco is working with a team that is happy, positive, and collaborative all at the same time. He followed up by saying, ”Whether I’m working with an entire team of makeup artists, stylists, models, and assistants, or simply working one-on-one with a brand to shoot simple products, I know a shoot is going to be good when everyone involved is in a good mood.”

The “Awe-Ha” moment in Francisco career was the first time he was paid to shoot a brand’s product. This made him feel like he was moving in the right direction, as a brand demands quality photos to sell their products. He started out working with a few small T-shirt companies, but with time, offers to shoot larger brands began to roll in. He has had numerous opportunities to work with some influential people in the fashion industry.

Francisco is humbled by the opportunities that he has been able to be a part of, and hopes to continue to grow awareness of his talent. It was so amazing to spend some time getting to know Francisco. He is such a positive individual, and sees beauty in everything that surrounds us.
